I seem to have missed this one, but there hasn't been any change
to cause that to happen. Note that the @ character should be the
very first character of the body of the message. Maybe there is a
new, buggy, IM client that magically inserts whitespace?

i've seen this over the time, but usually to one single message from time to time.
now, this is happening most of the time, and with many users.
just this week, I saw or experienced this maybe 12+ times.
