On Robert's Kyte channel [http://tinyurl.com/2xzkc2] - the one
from two days ago where he's wearing the yellow shirt, entitled
"Dealing with micro celebrity status". I thought it was a
fascinating reaction and clearly Scoble has been thinking deeply
about the issues surrounding the widespread use of camcorders.
Issues he addresses include how we can play to the camera,
always wear a camera face or just become comfortable with being our
normal selves while recorded. In fact it's interesting to see how
normal Scoble looks now while recording, not smiling, sipping from
his coffee, almost as if he was just talking to you in person.
He also notes that he quickly moved away from Ustreaming to
using Kyte instead because with 'almost-live' Kyte he had the
chance to access the quality/content of the video before
publishing.
Re: "The Observer effect" that's very much related, and exactly
the kind of thing we need to address. I've been as thrilled by
Ustreaming as anyone but do now worry that we may be distorting
this with live streaming.
I've scrapped the post I was writing - and I'm going to point to
this instead! :)
@Festoon (Michael Kiely)
and I have been discussing this. We are going to continue to bring
cameras to OpenCoffee and other events, primarily for the purpose
of recording interviews with consenting parties for later
publication on a soon-to-be-launched new technews videoblog. We
want to use the events as a backdrop, as an opportunity to meet
interesting people to interview, and we want to report on the
events themselves. Note I say "report on" - not "interfere
with".
We will provide equipment and support for live streaming if
people have something they want to broadcast. Or anyone who wants
to can do it - as Eoghan did in Dublin. But no matter who does it,
I think there ought to be a time and space where people can breathe
freely, knowing that they are not part of a broadcast.
And at risk of stating the obvious, now that we've all tried it
out, let's not feel that we have to stream for streaming's sake.
There's a perfectly adequate Twitter/Jaiku channel reaching out to
interested parties outside the event. I'd suggest we don't turn the
cameras on unless we get a Tweet saying: "Give us a look!" ;)
When you point a camera at something, you change it. Usually a
cameraman wants to capture for a specific purpose, usually for an
edit which usually has a point to make. Unfortunately Scoble &
Winer seem to be fixated on the merits or otherwise of
recording
Speaking with the expertise of someone who has borked more than
one video rendering, I think there is excellent value in
orchestrating four-minute video moments. Everyone involved knows
what they are getting. We will harvest more professional content,
in a way that helps the entrepreneurs by giving them a mirror to
their online video presence. Besides that, high-quality video fits
inside our third level entrepreneurship module better than an
amateur stream-up.
We have an unfinished conversation that extends from this thread
and I wonder if James, Conn, Michael and Liam would agree to
joining in on a half-hour recorded phone conversation for the
world.

Have you got a link to that James? Working on a blog post here on the subject of the Observer Effect. By streaming OpenCoffee, are we distorting it?

Hear! Hear! Let demand dictate whether there's a stream. Guest speaker events would be ideal candidates for streaming, for example.

everything. This sounds like amateur writers debating the merits of publishing every word that comes into their heads.

Great quote Mike. I'm learning loads from this discussion alone. Thanks goodness for Jaiku!

No worries Mike, looking forward to hearing all about the implications of Flash HD support next time.
Sure Bernie, I'll tune in as a curious observer but the rest of you guys are the (video) podcasting experts.
