It would have to replace the Contacts app, integrate with Google
Maps and the internal GPS for presence; should be able to SMS,
group SMS from the app; and it would be nice to be able to filter
the list by most-contacted, latest update, alpha, etc.
Of course, these are the same needs that the S60 folks have been
asking for; it would only be right to ask for both to get it :)
Apple doesn't have to allow it; behavior that is
allowed by the iPhone allows one to move the defalt app to another
screen and therefore use another app that fulfills the
functionality better ;)
I'd be happy with a simple but fast iPhone native interface that
would show me my Overview page with whatever people have posted on
it, let me immediately and easily post a jaiku. Bonus would be a
contacts page where I could specifically see just one contact's
jaikus. Extra bonus would be posting to channels.
I think it's important to focus on getting vital stuff to work
first before adding more features. In that same sense, if the Jaiku
team needs to focus on keeping regular Jaiku stable before they
even consider the early adopter iPhone crowd, the iPhone app will
simply have to wait. (or can some non-Jaiku-teamer out there use
the API to make one? Not sure how iPhone apps work in this
sense...)
@spongefile :
Everything you asked for I I think could be done by a 3rd-party
through the API. I agree that it would be the most appropriate
place to start. I would be happy to put it together if someone
would provide an iPhone ;-)
@jwb That would be awesome of
course. But doesn't Apple provide a test environment without the
need for the actual hardware...? Not that I would be opposed to
someone sending you an iPhone for your troubles...
@spongefile:
Absolutely. Great thoughts. Simple, basic and entry level would
satisfy us all.
On the other hand, let's not call the iPhone crowd the early
adopters. It's one of the singular (or Cingular prior to AT&T)
tech success stories of our day. Jaiku's presence there is not just
important but essential for platform adoption and success.
@journeyguy I suppose
I'm mostly thinking of people in Finland when I'm referring to
early adopters. The iPhone is indeed a huge success for a single
product, but still only a tiny fraction of the populace will own
iPhones in the next year. Not sure what percentage of US users have
iPhones. On the other hand, the percentage of the populace using
Jaiku is also pretty small, but the percentage of those using Jaiku
AND an iPhone is probably higher than average.
Btw, to add to my initial comment, I of course fully recognize
that the iPhone would allow all kinds of insane coolness like
posting your exact position via GPS, posting photos, seeing which
friends are closest to you right now, etc. But I guess I'd rather
have a simple app first and soon, and get regular updates for it,
than a swiss army knife app packed with features (and bugs,
presumably) nine months from now.

What sort of things would you look for in a Jaiku iPhone app?

Yeah, three Twitter apps, but no Jaiku app in AppStore.

I like what @arjw said. I would also add posting pix too.

I think I've confused myself.

Hey, looks like the Juhu guy has made an iPhone version, it's just not ported to the official SDK yet: http://juhu-mac.blogspot.com/
