Jaiku Mobile - Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is Jaiku Mobile for S60?
Jaiku Mobile is a software application for mobile phones that enables you to post and browse Jaikus, add comments, and share your status and location. Currently Jaiku Mobile is available for Nokia S60 smartphones (see the list of supported models).
2. I don't have S60 mobile phone! Are there any alternatives?
If you don't have S60 mobile phone, there are several alternatives:
- The mobile version of the Jaiku Web site at m.jaiku.com can be accessed using most mobile phones, including the iPhone
- The Jaiku widget is compatible with most Java-enabled mobile phones

- You can post and receive Jaikus by SMS using Jaiku's international number at +46 737 494 0501. Activate your mobile number here. See also the SMS commands
2. How does Jaiku Mobile work?
Jaiku Mobile works like the phone's regular phone book, and enhances the standard contact list with presence information. It displays the buddy icon, availability, latest Jaiku message, and location for you and your Jaiku contacts in your contact list. It enables you to
- Browse and post Jaikus
- Add comments
- Share your availability based on your ring profile (green light = ringing, yellow light = vibrate, red light = silent)
- Share your location (neighborhood, city, country) based on cellular network towers
- Share your calendar events (if you don't want to share your calendar, Jaiku only displays your status as "busy" when an event is active)
- Share who you're with based on nearby Bluetooth devices
3. What phones are compatible with Jaiku Mobile?
Currently Jaiku Mobile is available for Nokia S60 3rd Edition devices (see the list of compatible models). An earlier beta version is available for S60 2nd Edition phones. See jaikufans.com for third party applications for other devices
4. How do I get Jaiku Mobile on my phone?
You can download Jaiku Mobile to your phone for free from jaiku.com/mobile. After installing Jaiku on your phone, a setup wizard will guide you through the necessary steps to start using the service.
5. How do I get my phone to connect to the Internet?
To connect to the Internet from your phone, you need a data plan and the necessary settings from your mobile operator.
6. How much does it cost?
Jaiku Mobile is free software. Standard operator rates apply to data transfer on downloading and using Jaiku Mobile. For continuous use, we strongly recommend a fixed-rate data plan.
7. How much data does it transfer?
Jaiku listens for updates from the server in the background, and fetches updates from your contacts when you browse Jaiku. The amount of data transferred depends on the number of contacts you have and how active they are. On average, using Jaiku continuously with a small group of friends will generate about 20 MB of data transferred per month.
You can view the total amount of data transmitted by Jaiku at any time from Options > Settings > Data Transferred
8. Can I use Jaiku while roaming?
Jaiku works abroad as long as cellular data is available. However, Jaiku will automatically prompt you if you'd like to suspend data transfers while roaming away from your home network, as data can be expensive while roaming.
9. How does Jaiku Mobile affect battery life?
You can control how much battery Jaiku uses from Settings > Battery Life. There are two options: Better Performance and Better Battery Life. In Better Performance mode Jaiku will stay connected even when another application is active or the phone is not in use. This way your status will always be up to date. In Better Battery Life mode, Jaiku will disconnect soon after you switch to another application or the phone is left idle. Running Jaiku in GSM mode will require you to charge the battery about every 2 days. 3G consumes more power, and having your phone in Dual/3G mode will cause the battery to drain more quickly. We recommend nightly charging.
